Dig Smart, Work Safe:  Essential Training for Water and Wastewater Utilities

Course ID: MWWA 25-011; Wastewater BC-2025-3870

This half day training will cover three important safety topic for employees doing underground utility work:

  1. Identifying underground utilities
  2. Trench safety
  3. Roadwork safety

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand safe digging practices and damage prevention laws
  • Learn the benefits of Dig Safe membership for protecting underground facilities
  • Review the hazards of trench excavations
  • Understand the trenching requirements that municipalities must follow
  • Learn the types of equipment available for providing trench safety
  • Understand the “Work Zone” and why it is needed
  • Review proper use of signage, PPE and traffic control devices
  • Discuss common work zone situations encountered and the best strategies to use to stay safe
 This course is approved for 3 TCHs (Training Contact Hours) for Massachusetts Water & Wastewater Operators.
